For my Unit 3 personal project I would like to tackle an issue that I can cultivate a passion for through unique and engaging research. This is unlikely to be many of the obvious issues that plague people today such as poverty, disability, illnesses etc as their scope will likely stifle my creativity and prove too daunting to discover any personal connection I can make. I have also had a fortunate enough upbringing to not know these struggles first-hand, and therefore will likely lack the intimate knowledge that others in these fields may have accrued over their lives.
Therefore, I believe my project will either end up being environmentally driven - as I believe living sustainably and consciously of the world around us is a habit everybody will need to adopt in the near future - or find itself stemming from such a peculiar niche that I currently could not even begin to guess what it may relate to.
Regardless of which direction my project ends up taking I would enjoy the challenge of designing a product to answer the issues I discover, considering every facet from function to accessibility, its cycle from creation to end of life, and the increasing importance that packaging has in the consumer's experience. As this project is assessing our entrepreneurial qualities I would certainly like my product to reflect those same qualities, celebrating the start-up nature of the business and immense flexibility that comes from exploiting a gap in any market.
Of the example projects I have viewed so far my favourite has been the Brazilian bike project as it answered such a specific and unheard of issue that it's hard to imagine how they even discovered the tax difference. It was also very encouraging to see that such a snarky product managed to get attention from government officials and even spearheaded genuine change on a country-wide scale. The level of absurdity surrounding the entire project - both the issue itself and their solution - definitely speak to me and feel like the kind of end result I would ideally arrive at by the end of my Unit 3.
