An exercise in kitsch, the MAHŌ Mangler is an adults-only stress toy inspired by the comedic brutality of the Japanese game show Endurance. Features blatant disregard for both safety and design etiquette.
While the journey to reach this end product from the prompts of 'utopianism', 'concrete' and 'wrap' is very abstract and required several detours in my research, I couldn't be more happy with this absurd conclusion and the opportunity it presented to re-learn some of my Cinema4D and 3D modelling skills.
As the final influence from Memphis design came into the process quite near the end of my final submission I feel the colours could use some tweaking, as well as certain aspects of the texturing on the cogs and rollers not meeting the realistic standards I would have liked. Were I to do this project again I would dedicate more time to understanding material properties and professional texturing techniques within C4D, as well as taking more time to research more creative scene-creation as I felt my skills limited what I could make to decorate these posters.
I would not, however, change the Japanese text to translate into proper relevant descriptions as I feel their blatantly insincere and ripped-off nature adds to the identity that both Endurance and my product are trying to convey: a simulation of Eastern culture, sacrificing its integrity to appeal to a Western market.
